Chapter 7: Training Outside

In an apartment a few kilometers away from Nan University.

Zhang Jiuling looked at the moon in the sky, without the slightest emotion in his eyes. The bright moonlight shined onto him as if it gave him a sense of loneliness and desertion.

“Boss, boss?”

A man’s voice came from the other end of the phone, bringing Zhang Jiuling back to his senses. He said,

“What?”

“Oh, I just wanted to ask you, how’s the military training going for the class you’re teaching?”

“They’re fine,” Zhang Jiuling thought for a while, then added, “Their physical fitness abilities are poor.”

There was a laugh on the other end of the phone, “They are only seventeen or eighteen. How can they be compared to us? If you treat them based on the same requirements we have, then that would definitely not be right.”

Zhang Jiuling: “Forget that. So, how long will it take for you to be back?”

“Probably at least a few more days. The mission’s a bit tricky this time since the drug company is quite hidden and hard to find.”

Zhang Jiuling was silent for a moment, and then his voice became formal.

“Haonan, please be careful.”

Wang Haonan, who was on the other side of the phone, paused, then chuckled.

“Don’t worry, boss. I’ll be fine.”

“When the mission is complete, I’ll have to come back and see my class you substituted for.”

Zhang Jiuling: “Come back safely.”

“Understood, boss.”

“And also, come back quickly and take your class back. I don’t want to continue training children.”

“…”

After hanging up on the phone, Zhang Jiuling turned around and glanced at the photo on the table.

There were two men in military uniforms, one more sunny, and the other sterner. Those two were Wang Haonan and him.

They were both members of the Special First Team, but he was now retired, while Wang Haonan was still active and on duty.

Translator’s note: Special First Team is similar to a spy team.

Originally, Wang Haonan had applied to be an instructor for military training on a whim.

However, when the military training for Nan University was about to begin, Wang Haonan had to return and complete a mission. He said that after he returned, he would take back his class.

Now, however, Wang Haonan had been gone on the mission for more than ten days.

Speaking of such, Zhang Jiuling used to be the best in the special forces. How could he be sent to a university as a military training officer after he retired?

He was a bit confused.

When Wang Haonan returned, he must make him do three-hundred pushups as a punishment.

The red sun was scorching, and at noon, it was particularly scorching.

There were no students on the broad military training field. Silence could only be heard, other than birds chirping.

Looking down, there were still heat waves on the ground, which was enough to see how high the temperature was.

Not far from the military training grounds, passing two streets filled with trees was the student dormitory. At the moment, it was a quiet lunch break.

“Oh my God, I’m gonna have a heat stroke!”

In Li Jiao’s dormitory, Zhang Yue was paralyzed on a bed, holding a fan in her right hand and fanning. But her forehead kept sweating.

“I’m also literally dying.”

Su Linlin laid weakly on the bed railing with a frail appearance. Just like Zhang Yue, she also had a small fan in her hands and was fanning hard.

They didn’t know what luck they had, but the air conditioner in their dormitory had broken last night. They had asked the teacher to fill out an order for repairing but were told that it would have to be fixed later.

They also hadn’t thought that turning off the air conditioner in the summer was equivalent to killing them because of the high temperature.

Last night, all of them had taken cold showers multiple times in the bathroom. But even so, the temperature of their bodies would simply not drop.

It was not only hot but also humid. Even if you left the balcony door open, then it would still be unbearably warm. It was scorching, like being inside a big steamer.

Su Linlin opened the curtains beside the bed, and when she saw that the curtain of the bed opposite Li Jiao’s was still tightly covered, she shouted.

“Jiaojiao, Jiaojiao.”

“Pull the curtain open. Aren’t you suffocating from the heat?”

“Jiaojiao.”

No one answered even after shouting twice. Su Linlin thought that she had fainted from the heat, so she yelled again two times, loudly.

“Jiaojiao, you haven’t fainted, right?”

“Jiaojiao!”

Zhang Yue heard the sounds and wondered what was wrong, so she turned over and got up, shouting to the bed beside her.

“Jiao, are you alright?”

“I… I… I… I… I’m here to save you!”

With that, she turned around and wanted to climb down the bed’s ladder.

But at that moment, Li Jiao’s bed suddenly “clicked,” and then the curtain of her bed was pulled open.

Her face was flushed, with a pouty small mouth, sleepy eyes, and messy hair. She was wearing a white T-Shirt, showing two slender arms.

Obviously, she had just woken up.

She touched the back of her head, a bit confused, then muttered.

“What’s wrong?”

“Oh my God,” Su Linlin breathed a sigh of relief, “Jiaojiao, we called for you, but you were silent. Boss and I thought that you had fainted inside.”

Zhang Yue was already halfway down the ladder. After she saw that Li Jiao was okay, facing the people in the next bed, she shouted.

“Jiao, what were you doing? Why didn’t you respond?”

“I had just fallen asleep.”

Li Jiao rubbed her eyes. Her voice was soft and waxy.

Hearing that, Zhang Yue had an inquiring expression on her face.

“Jiao,” with her thumb up, she asked, “How could you sleep through that?”

Su Linlin was even more exaggerated than she was shocked, “Jiaojiao, you really are more than awesome!”

Translator’s note: This sentence uses sarcasm in expressing how Li Jiao could sleep through that loud of a voice.

Li Jiao continued to rub her eyes, which were dry and itchy, making tears almost come out.

She replied: “I’m just so tired~”

As soon as she had woken up, they had heard the unique and soft tone that belonged to someone from the Jiangnan Water Town, with the final word said twirling. That tone went straight into the heart of people.

Translator’s note: Jiangnan is a place in Ancient China where people had accents that were soft and sweet.

Su Linlin and Zhang Yue were crippled by this sound. They couldn’t stand it.

Especially Zhang Yue. She raised her head exaggeratedly, trying to hold back a nonexistent nosebleed.

At the same time, she also waved her hand and pretended to say, “Ah, ah, ah. Quickly, come see if my nosebleed comes out.”

Editor’s note: She’s exaggerating. People fake or sometimes have actual nosebleeds in novels or webtoons, (exaggeratedly), for reasons such as seeing a handsome man or seeing cute things.

Su Linlin glanced at her with a smile, then turned to look at the person opposite to her, who was wearing wide short sleeves and had a thin pink rabbit blanket on her stomach.

Her hair was simply tied up, but because she had slept, a few strands had fallen onto her shoulders. Coupled with her cute and confused expression, it couldn’t be described how cute she was.

Su Linlin almost died from the cuteness of this “rabbit.” Just looking at that cute bunny,  she held her heart and said dramatically.

Editor’s note: She’s referring to Li Jiao. Li Jiao is the “rabbit.”

“Ah~ Jiaojiao, is this what it feels like to be in love?”

“Sa lang hei yo~”

Editors note: “Sa lang hei yo” is a popular Chinese way of saying “I love you.” It’s is a Korean word translated into Chinese.

After speaking, she pretended to be stabbed in the heart by Cupid and fell onto the bed.

Li Jiao was quite amused by her, “Linlin, really, you shouldn’t have come to the art department. You should’ve entered the acting department.”

“The Golden Horse Queen in the future will definitely be you.”

Editors note: The Golden Horse Awards is an award ceremony similar to the Academy Awards. The Golden Horse Queen means the best actress.

Zhang Yue also said, “Really, Lin, you should join the acting department. It’s still not too late to go now.”

“Go, go, go.”

Su Linlin smiled and got up from the bed, “You mean I’m a good actress?”

“Furthermore, it seems like if I transfer to the acting department, I won’t need to continue with military training.”

“Hm, no military training? Are you really willing to stop seeing our handsome instructor?”

Li Jiao joked with a smile.

Upon hearing this, Su Linlin waved her hand.

“Forget it, forget it. Military training these days is inhumane. The instructor is a cold-faced Yama that isn’t close to humanity.”

“We have a lot of girls in our class. Yet, even so, look at how he is. He still trains us more ruthlessly than other classes!”

Once this was spoken, the other girls couldn’t help but agree. Yes, the instructor really was too cruel.

It was only military training, yet why did other classes only have to stand for thirty minutes, while their class had to stand for forty minutes? Moreover, other classes also had breaks, but for their class, as long as they didn’t die from training, then they would have to train.

This morning, they had taken a rest halfway, but for the rest of the time, they were either training or being punished.

It was too difficult for them to stand such a devil instructor~

Li Jiao glanced at her two small feet. There were several small red and swollen openings, which were full of scars, and her fair skin was even more seriously injured.

The blisters that were a result of the last run haven’t healed yet, and every day was high-intensity training. Her wounds always healed but would get injured again. Every time she ran, it would hurt like actual hell.

Only four days had passed, and there were still ten more days to go. How would she survive?

“Hey, I heard that for a few days, we’re going somewhere outside to train.” Zhang Yue said suddenly.

“Going out to train?” Li Jiao turned her head to look at her, “Why?”

A thought suddenly came to Su Linlin’s mind, “I know, I know.”

“This seems to be a tradition of Nan University. Every year, there’s a program for outside military training. I heard that there’ll be training at Maple Leaf Lake, which is right next to our school.”

“And when that time comes, all freshmen will bring compressed food and run around the lake before returning.”

“Around the lake?!”

Li Jiao was surprised. Her big eyes were full of shock and disbelief.

Did she hear that right? Was she going to train at the twenty-kilometer-long Maple Leaf Lake?

Even as a native of this city, ever since she was young, she hadn’t walked around a full circle around Maple Leaf Lake.

It was a lake with a total length of twenty kilometers!

Speaking of Nan University, the location was excellent. It was located in the center of City C, and there were various bustling shopping malls, food courts, and different kinds of street fashion.

At the same time, it was also close to a national A-level scenic spot, where there was beautiful scenery all four seasons, which attracted many tourists all year around.

It was close to beautiful scenic spots, and Nan University was also famous for its fine arts department, so the leaders of the school were ingenious.

They didn’t know when it started, but there was a special outdoors military training program around the lake. They could see beautiful scenery while also training.

Su Linlin was also very tired, “Yeah, around the lake. I also heard that there were many obstacles along the way.”

Zhang Yue added, “Yes, I heard from last year’s seniors that they left at seven-thirty in the morning, at the last military training program, and returned to school at six-thirty in the afternoon. When they came back, their legs were very tired.

“Ah~”

Li Jiao held her chin with a frown, her brows also frowning.

Mother, I should’ve listened to you.

Why did I come to military training?

Her feet still hurt, and she didn’t know whether they’d be better on the day of the training.

Zhang Yue also added,

“I also heard that the training program will be two days later.”

When hearing this, Su Linlin and Li Jiao both collapsed onto their beds tacitly and wailed.

“Ah~”

As soon as they fell, the two bounced off the bed.

“God damn, it’s hot!”

“Ah~ Teacher, when will you come to repair the air conditioner~”

“It’s so warm. I’m going to be cooked~”

“Ah fuck, I bet volcanos have the same level of this heat.”

“Life is too difficult, augh~”

“…”

After a leisure lunch break, thousands of freshmen dragged their sleepy and heavy steps back onto the military training grounds.

Compared to the morning sun, the afternoon’s sun was more irritating. Standing alone was enough to make people dizzy.

As usual, the first event was always military standing.

Thousands of freshmen, standing in their respective positions, neatly facing the sun, opened up a new chapter of the afternoon training.

A loud whistle sounded, and the chief instructor gave orders on the stage.

“Instructors, go!”

“Arrive at the designated locations. Start. Train!”

“Yes, sir!”

Then, neat footsteps sounded, with them running towards the center of the military training field. The instructors dispersed, found their own class, and started training.

The class next to Li Jiao’s class, which was the second class, had an instructor with a Sichuan accent, that ran and came over first.

Seeing the crooked students in the class, it was as if they were ill.

Then, loudly, he shouted.

“Stand at ease, hold your chest, tuck in your abdomen, and raise your head!”

“The finger should be close to your trousers’ seam, the body should be straight, and the neck should be straight!”

“Didn’t you rest at noon? Why are you guys still tired?”

He said as he walked, and after scanning the entire class, he returned to the front row and saw a familiar face.

The young instructor frowned subconsciously and couldn’t bear to have a straight face.

When walking to that male classmate, he couldn’t help but speak in his Sichuan accent.

“Oh my God, it’s you again?”

Editor’s note: He says this in a very Sichuanese accent. It’s like a cowboy   as your instructor, (joking of course), saying “Oh ma Gawd, it’s ya again?”

“I told you to stand properly, stand properly!”

“Close your abdomen. Close your abdomen!”

“You’re not pregnant, why can’t suck your belly back?”

“…”

There were small muffled laughs around them, and everyone held their laughs back uncomfortably.

This was not to be blamed on them. It was only because the instructor was too funny.

Li Jiao and her class couldn’t help but laugh too. Some people even looked back boldly and saw that it was the male student. Now they understood why the instructor was enraged.
