Chapter 5: Punishment Run

Upon hearing this, the lazy Class 1 that was paralyzed on the ground, quickly got up and sorted out the clothes and hats, then stood in line.

The speed was as fast as lightning.

After they all stood in line, a big question mark appeared on all the heads of the class.

?????

Weren’t they resting? The instructor hadn’t called for them to assemble. What did they get up for?

Well, the only explanation that could be given was that it was a conditioned reflex. Hence, the whole class felt like they wanted to cry.

From this incident, it could be seen how deeply Zhang Jiuling had influenced them.

Thinking of the past, because Class 1 had been slow to assemble, their Yama instructor had directly asked them to run around the field for a few laps and practice getting assembled together.

If even one second was away from the standard deviation, then they would have to run another lap. So repeatedly, it was hard for their class assembly not to be fast.

While the formation of the class was good, there was still a lot of movement. The instructors of Class 2 and Class 13 were paying close attention to their class and when they saw their class finally assemble, they sighed.

The Instructor of Class 2: It’s still the boss who’s the best. When can my class become the same?

The Instructor of Class 13: It seems that I’m still too kind to the little pupils in my class. Looking at the class of the Yama instructor, the conditioned reflex has come out.

Thinking of this, the instructors of the two classes turned their heads.

“Faster, faster! Everyone, stand in the correct position!”

“You’re moving, moving, and moving. What’s the point of moving? Did I tell you that you could move?”

“Stand up quickly and correctly. If someone moves again, then the whole class will add five minutes to standing!”

“You’re moving, still moving?!”

The instructor of Class 2 was now animated and wanted to transform his class into something like Class 1.

Class 13’s Instructor was not as “cruel.” He instead said with a smile.

“All of you, arm-swing training. Fifty times!”

“One, two!”

“Let me tell you guys, I have been good enough to you all. Look at class one. They practiced until it was a literal reflex for them.”

“…”

Class 1 student: Do you think we want to? It’s only because the instructor is too cruel and inhumane.

Zhang Jiuling came back, but he came back alone. What happened to the two male students before?

Even so, no one dared to ask.

Zhang Jiuling, dressed in his military uniform, still looked indifferent.

His eyes were cold, and his pupils were dark and bright. They were like the eyes of a wild animal. Simply looking into them would cause people to shudder.

The whole Class 1 was very nervous. Their entire bodies were tight, just like piles of wooden stakes.

But as a matter of fact, this look didn’t have any “evil” meaning to it. Instead, people that were familiar with the special forces would know that type of vision was the kind of aura that people who had fought on the battlefield for a long time, possessed.

It wasn’t possible for them to change their domineering and murderous looks in a short time.

Zhang Jiuling glanced at the eyes of the class and ordered them,

“Everyone!”

“Stand at ease, stand at attention!”

“Next up, practice walking while standing at attention!”

“Everyone, go!”

“One two one, one two one!”

“One two one, one two one!”

“Last row, you’re scattered.”

“The rest of us stand still. Last row, turn to the back!

“Start marching!”

“One two one, one two one!”

“One, two, three, four!”

“One, two, three, four!”

“One, two, three, four!”

“The slogan is not loud enough. Practice it 20 times by yourself!”

The last row collectively shouted in grief: “OK!”

Then, they were left where they were standing, practicing the slogan over and over again.

“One, two, three, four!”

“One, two, three, four!”

“One, two…!”

The last row was where Su Linlin was standing at.

Li Jiao looked at her, shouting the slogans again and again. She felt silently sympathetic for her.

Now that this has happened, you wouldn’t want the instructor to come back early, would you?

However, not waiting for her to moan more, Zhang Jiuling came over again, walked to the large group, and said,

“Everyone, turn to the back!”

“One, two!”

“The sound of all your feet stomping is not neat enough. Do it again.”

“Everyone, turn to the back!”

“One, two!”

The sound of their feet stomping was still not neat enough. Almost every row has some people that have been disordered.

Zhang Jiuling was obviously not satisfied, his eyebrows slightly coagulated.

“The last row, everyone, turn to the back!”

“One, two!”

When they separated, it was much better. Zhang Jiuling continued to examine the people behind.

“Second to the last row, everyone, turn to the back!”

“One, two!”

“Third row, everyone, turn to the back!”

“One, two!”

“Last row, everyone, turn back!”

“One, two!”

The first row, where Li Jiao stood, was still not neat. There were two or three people going too quick, and others were also going too slow. As a result, the sound of their stamping feet was very disorganized.

Even after standing still, the people in Li Jiao’s row were very nervous. It was over, it was truly over. The Yama was going to punish them.

Sure enough, the next second, they heard Zhang Jiuling’s cold voice.

“Last row, the sound of your stomping feet is not neat. Run around the field for two laps and then come back.”

“Yes, sir.”

In Li Jiao’s row, there were eight girls. After hearing the order, they powerlessly agreed.

It was over. They had to run again. It was a death sentence, really.

Zhang Jiuling said, “The first girl of the lane, lead the team on the runway.”

“Yes, sir.”

The girl at the front of the lane immediately took the first line of the military training ground’s central site and went onto the plastic runway.

The rest of the people continue to practice while Li Jiao’s lane was on the track. The eight girls stood in a row and ran.

In the morning, Li Jiao’s left and right feet that were inside her shoes had blisters because she had been punished to do steering exercises. At noon, when she went back to her dormitory to treat her blisters, she was in tears.

Now that she had to run again, she didn’t know whether the wound would be able to withstand any further damage with only her bandages.

Li Jiao looked down at her feet. It should do.

Then, she looked up and followed the person in front of her.

It was already past four o’clock in the afternoon, but the sun was still fierce. More than 40 degrees of blazing light shined onto their bodies, like a pot of boiling water, burning them into smoke.

The sweat on Li Jiao’s forehead kept dropping down, from her hairline to her chin, and then to the ground. Because of the sun, both sides of her cheeks were red hot.

After a lap, the wound on her feet began to ache and hurt. It apparently swelled up again.

She had no spare time and energy to care about the pain in her feet. Her legs were as heavy as a ton of lead. What only kept her running was pure force.

The reason why she had studied art from an early age was because of her poor physique. Ever since she was small, her grades in her physical education classes had only barely passed the grade line, and it was only because the teacher had given her those scores in sympathy.

Running, in the past ten years, had only occurred during her physical education classes.

As for the rest of the time, she either stayed at home, did drawing at home, or would be in school.

To put it bluntly, she was an idiot towards sports.

For the military training, her family had originally planned to not have her attend. This was Li Jiao’s mother’s way of saying that since her original body was already weak, she shouldn’t embarrass her and fail.

However, although Li Jiao’s ability to play sports wasn’t good, she was still very stubborn. When her parents refused to let her come, she had wanted to prove herself and came anyway.

Of course, now, Li Jiao thought that she should’ve listened to her mom.

Mom, ah, I really want to go home~

It was now the last lap. Li Jiao didn’t even know how she had managed to persist this far.

All she remembered was that, when she finally stopped, her feet felt so soft that she almost directly got down on her knees.

After the eight girls finished running, they lined up and gasped back to the central site of the military training ground.

The class was doing arm-swinging exercises. Su Linlin and Zhang Yue both saw that her lips were white, so they all looked at her with concern.

“Report!”

The girl in the front row reported themselves and asked to be included in the practice.

Zhang Jiuling turned his head, look at them, and sad.

“The first row, everyone is here.”

“We’re here!”

The eight girls stood in line immediately.

“Reset your positions. Stand straight!”

“Everyone, turn to… the back!”

“One, two!”

The feet stamping sounds were still not neat. Because they just ran, the eight girls’ legs all felt weak. They came over immediately after they finished running. Even if they wanted to do a good job, their helpless and weak feet did not listen to the command.

Zhang Jiuling did not have many words to say. He said directly.

“Run two more laps, then come back.”

“Why?”

A girl not happy with what he just said.

Zhang Jiuling said: “You didn’t report. Add another lap.”

“How come?”

Once obedient, the girl was now angry. Just now, they had finished running two laps. Simply because they hadn’t gotten there within a minute, they had to run again. How come?

Zhang Jiuling glanced faintly at her, “The sound of your feet stamping is not neat, so two laps. And because you didn’t report, add one more lap.”

“Three laps in total. Finish running, then come back.”

“How co…”

The girl wanted to fight back but was pulled by the people next to her, who whispered to her saying.

“Forget it, Lulu. Don’t complain anymore.”

The girl named Lulu was pulled away and the several other girls, though unwilling, could only follow.

Li Jiao did the same, silently following them back onto the running track.

As she left, Zhang Yue and Su Linlin looked at her worriedly. She shook her head with a smile, and said, “It’s okay.”

No one thought that the few girls that just got off the running track would return once more.

This time was different. A few people obviously had anger, especially the girl called Lulu, who quickly ran the first lap. But when she stopped and gasped for air, the two girls beside her stopped too.

“Lulu, are you okay?”

“Yea, yea, I’m fine.” She waved her hand, “I-I’m not running anymore.”

Others tried to persuade her, ”Well, there are only two more laps. You can do it.”

“No, nope. I won’t run anymore, who cares about what others think.”

The girl named Lulu directly sat onto the ground and said, “Even if Yama comes, I would still not run.”

“If you want my opinion, then I say, don’t run. Even if we don’t run, what can he do?”

One girl was worried: “No, if we don’t run, what would happen if the instructor told the counselor?”

“It wouldn’t be too bad. The worst scenario, we’d get criticized, but who cares about that.”

Lulu said: “I don’t wanna die just because of this running thing.”

Hearing this, the two other girls’ stances wavered. The two laps they had originally run had already been very tiring.

Now that they were punished to run for a second time, with all honesty, which one of them would want to run?

They ran because they were afraid of the instructor. But now, listening to what Lulu said, the two girls simply sat directly onto the ground and stopped caring. Whoever wanted to run could run, but they wouldn’t.

The three of them sat down onto the flowerbed beside the running track and looked at the five people running from behind, trying to persuade them.

“Don’t run anymore. Let’s just sit here for a while, and then wait several minutes before we go back.”

“Exactly. Don’t run anymore, let’s just all sit here and wait a few minutes, then go back.”

There were two girls persuaded, both who nodded and dragged their tired feet and sat with them together.

Li Jiao and the other two girls stood still and did not move. One of them was her roommate, Tang Yuran, and the other one she didn’t know. However, that girl seemed to be a very honest girl, and her hair was combed into braids.

Li Jiao glanced at the flowerbed where the five people rested, then glanced at the military training ground where their class was still training, and where their instructors were still correcting.

Although the military training ground was large, if they didn’t run, then the instructors would absolutely know. Moreover, the central site was relatively empty. So, as long as the instructor turned his head, then he would definitely see them.

Thinking about it, Li Jiao said to them,

“Let’s still run. The instructor can see.”

The girl named Lulu said haughtily: “Let him see all he wants. What can he do to me? Regardless of what he does, I won’t run.”

Except for her, although the other four peoples’ stances wavered, they still did not move. It seemed that they did not want to run.

Li Jiao didn’t speak anymore. She looked down at her own feet, which were probably blistering again. It hurt.

She frowned, gritted her teeth, then ran.

There were two laps left. She could do it.

Tang Yuran glanced at several people over there, untied her hair, then neatly tied it up into a high ponytail, and then wore her military hat. She ran along the track, slowly.

Her back was arrogant, like a white swan.

The girl with braids looked at the two people that had left, hesitated for a moment, then followed suit.

“Lulu, what are we going to do?”

By the flowerbed, a girl asked.

Lulu snorted hatefully, “Idiot!”

“We’ll stay here, and then we’ll follow them when they get to the last half of the lap.”

She didn’t believe them. What could the instructor do to her, really?

By the time Li Jiao had run her second lap, she had hit her bottom line. The blazing sunlight scorched her body as if all the moisture on her had evaporated.

Her legs seemed to be tied up with two large stones, her pace dragging her slowly, then more slowly. She supported her waist with her hand, and her chest felt stuffy. Now, every breath she breathed gave her burning pain.

On the last lap, she became slower and slower. In the end, she was only able to walk slowly.

  1. Aww, the poor girl. I couldn’t even walk without wincing when I was a little too enthusiastic wearing new shoes on a long walk last summer, and she runs and does exercises on blistered feet? Respect, girl. (Even if I know this is fiction.)

    Thanks for the update!
